OK, let me see if I have this straight: it is the elmo demon with parading around designed to frighten and the return to his alter ego, an innocent little boy. How did you convince him to leave it on as long as he did? I suspect that The Indiana Grandma and Grandpa may behind this. lol

Pretty close. The "vision" was this: The music at the beginning is supposed to be the heroic music.
The explosion sound and shift is the turning point of the film, when the protagonist realizes he can't just be his alter ego forever.
The final music is Super Elmo unveiling his true self to someone close to him, most likely an attractive female he is interested in.
It's like Batman for babies...
